TNO Circular Plastics is dedicated to addressing the issues associated with plastic waste. To achieve this, TNO employs advanced techniques that bridge material science and artificial intelligence. This internship offers an opportunity to explore cutting-edge solutions in plastic recycling and sorting, aiming to transform waste into valuable resources and reduce environmental harm.

What will be your role?

This internship project focuses on developing an advanced machine learning tool, to sort plastic waste per material type and quality based on various spectroscopy measurements. The goal is to build a real time sorting tool and highlight the advantages of the different spectroscopy measurements types.

You will work in a passionate team of scientists, utilizing your skills in programming and computer sciences. The aim of this internship is to provide students with a taste of research outside academia.

What we expect from you

Candidates should be currently pursuing a degree in data science, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, with experience in data analysis and machine learning, is crucial. Familiarity with GIT is crucial. Knowledge in materials and polymer is a plus. Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail, are important.

The selection process

Important to be aware of before applying:

Before the start of the internship, the internship agreement from TNO needs to be signed. For students at a college or university based in the Netherlands, TNO uses the UNL-template

(supplemented with a number of specific agreements from TNO). For students of foreign and MBO educational institutions, the TNO internship agreement applies. TNO does not sign any other internship agreements.
Before the start of the internship, the educational institution will need to confirm in writing that:
- 1) you are enrolled at the educational institution during the internship, and;
- 2) the internship takes place as part of the programme of the study.
The confirmation of educational institution takes place by signing the UNL template or forms prepared by TNO.
Interns at TNO must be in possession of a Dutch residential address at the start of the internship. Performance of internship activities from abroad is not possible.
